Think of It as Training, Not Traumatizing
By Michelle Valeri, MV Skin Consulting

If you’ve spent any time doing Pilates, you’ve probably learned that the body doesn’t need to be beaten into submission to become stronger.

You don’t create strength by constantly overwhelming the body. You create it through appropriate challenge, repetition, recovery, and consistency.

So why have we accepted such a different philosophy when it comes to our skin?

Somewhere along the way, we’ve been taught that great skin requires more.

More products.
Stronger ingredients.
Deeper treatments.
More exfoliation.
More stimulation.

And sometimes, a few days of redness, peeling, or recovery is presented as proof that something is working.

As someone who has worked with skin for more than 30 years, I have a different perspective.

I don’t believe healthy skin needs to be traumatized in order to improve.

Skin is living tissue. It is constantly protecting, adapting, repairing, and renewing itself. That doesn’t mean we should simply leave it alone. It means we should be thoughtful about the signals we give it.

There is a difference between challenging tissue and damaging tissue.

There is a difference between stimulation and irritation.

And there is a difference between creating a temporary dramatic change and actually supporting healthy skin over time.

What if we approached skin the way we approach fitness?

We wouldn’t expect one brutal workout every few months to create a strong, healthy body.

We understand that consistency matters.

We understand that the right exercise depends on the person.

We understand that more weight, more intensity, or more time isn’t automatically better.

And we understand that recovery is part of the process—not a sign that the workout failed.

Skin deserves that same kind of common-sense thinking.

The goal isn’t to see how much we can do to the skin.

The goal is to determine what the skin actually needs and provide the appropriate input—consistently and without creating unnecessary damage.

That’s the thinking behind my system, Skin Fitness.

Not another complicated skin-care routine.

Not another treatment that requires you to hide out for a week.

Not more for the sake of more.

Training, rather than traumatizing.

I’ve been applying this philosophy to professional skin care for more than a decade, including the 15-minute treatments I first introduced at my holistic wellness spa in Tennessee in 2012.

Knowing what to do is important, but knowing what not to do is just as important.

And perhaps that’s a lesson worth carrying from the Pilates studio into the rest of our lives:

Your body doesn’t need more punishment.
Your skin doesn’t either.
